Ralph Johnson is the third author of the major design patterns book Gang of Four 1995. He also proposed Johnson and Foote's heuristics, presented in one of the earliest papers on OO design heuristics, Johnson and Foote 1988. Ralph Johnson was very involved in the Smalltalk community early on and continues to support the language.

Today, he is a research associate professor in the department of computer science at the University of Illinois.
